Why Peracide?

Peracide is our high-level in-situ peracetic acid (ISPAA) based cleaner, disinfectant, and deodoriser. Available on the NHS Supply Chain, from Mediq, and from CK Consumables Ltd, Peracide is an easy to use and highly efficacious sporicidal disinfectant with short contact times. We currently supply Peracide to several healthcare facilities and trusts, including Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, and Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Independent facilities such as care homes or schools can contact us at info@skychemicals.co.uk to purchase directly or to set up distribution.

Peracide has over 70 microbiological tests demonstrating its very high efficacy against all known microbes. Compared to the existing range of disinfectants, such as NaDCC tablets, chlorine dioxide, and hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid has numerous advantages from increased efficacy and shorter contact times, to a chlorine free formulation which is much less corrosive and doesn’t generate the range of toxic by-products of cleaning that are associated with chlorine chemistry.

Peracide remains efficacious in both clean and soiled conditions and contains surfactants to assist with cleaning so it can clean, disinfect, and deodorise in a one-step process. As Peracide is minimally affected by soils and dirt, and there are no toxic residues or by-products, there is no need for a pre- or post- clean.

Peracide also features an innovative colour change system indicating to end users when the product is ready to use, and when the solution should be discarded and replaced with a fresh solution. This simple visual indicator makes Peracide very easy to use, and the colour allows users, other staff, patients, and visitors to be confident that the disinfectant being used is fully fit for purpose. This can enhance or replace systems that require preparation times to be logged, and removes the possibility of spent solutions being used.

What is Peracide?

The Peracide formulation is a blend of pre-cursors that react together to produce the biocidal material peracetic acid when they are dissolved in water. The formulation also contains surfactants to help with surface wetting and assist with cleaning, a colour indicator system to assist users with ensuring only active solutions are used, and corrosion inhibitors to reduce the already low corrosivity of peracetic acid to negligible levels. The formulation contains no chlorine (or other halogen) compounds so does not generate toxic chlorinated by-products of cleaning, and leaves no harmful residues on surfaces that have been cleaned and disinfected.

The dry tablet formulation makes Peracide very easy and safe to store, and a single tub of Peracide tablets will generate 100 litres of 1000 ppm Peracide solution, reducing storage space requirements and lowering the environmental impact of transport by not having to ship the water, as is the case with many pre-diluted disinfectants and liquid formulations.

Peracide is a very effective biocide capable of inactivating and destroying bacteria, mycobacteria, viruses (enveloped or otherwise), fungi, and spores (such as C. Diff), with contact times typically much shorter than those required for chlorine based cleaning chemicals, quaternary ammonium compounds, hydrogen peroxide vaporisers, and UV-C treatment. Our tablets are formulated to generate a specific strength of peracetic acid solution that can be varied to fit the situation. At 1000 ppm Peracide is effective against all pathogens and is perfect for general use. For known outbreaks of particularly troublesome pathogens, such as C. Diff, increasing the strength to 2000 ppm will reduce the contact times giving faster turnaround of facilities.
